Canon EOS 80D Review:
I visited my uncle’s house last Friday because I love birds.
He took me to see his collection of birds from around the globe.
The beauty of those birds is beyond words.
They were all extremely classy.
Each bird’s body was patterned uniquely.
They were just stunning.
I was completely mesmerized by their peaks, eyes, and feathers.
Never before have I seen such spectacular birds.
I wanted to take pictures of the birds from every possible angle and post them on social media.
I, therefore, used my “Canon EOS 80D” camera for this.
I had fun using this excellent Camera to capture those birds in the picture.
This Camera helped me catch a lovely portrait.
Birds are difficult to photograph still, yet this Camera remarkably succeeded in doing so for me.
It gave me an immaculate and precise finish.
I took several pictures of those birds, and so far, my favorite is the bokeh effect that this Camera gave to my photographs.
I’m sucked into this Camera.
And I almost have the same fondness for birds and the Canon EOS 80D.
Overview:
A mid-range DSLR, the Canon 80D, was introduced in 2016 and is aimed at photographers who desire a more sophisticated camera than the Canon Rebel series’ entry-level model.
I’ve used the Canon 80D a lot over the last few months, and the conclusion is that it’s a reliable camera.
The 80D’s $1000 new price tag also makes it a reasonable bargain compared to other cameras aimed at a similar market.
It also makes it a fantastic fallback choice for experienced Canon camera users.
Near the top of Canon’s extensive line of entry-level DSLRs is the 80D. Similar in size to Canon Rebel cameras and the more sophisticated 7D series, it has a 1.6x APS-C crop sensor.
The Canon 80D is the model’s replacement, gaining a newer sensor and more potent autofocus tools.
In particular, the 80D had a 24-megapixel sensor with better ISO performance, whereas the 70D featured a 20-megapixel sensor that was more dated.
A significant advance for photographers who require a broader focusing coverage and better subject tracking is the 80D’s 45-point cross-type autofocus system, which replaces the 70D’s 19 points (also all cross-type).

Built-Quality:
The comparatively light polycarbonate and magnesium body feels incredibly solid in the palm.
I must admit that the Canon 80D feels superior to many Nikon cameras, especially the rival D7500, even though I am a devoted Nikon user.
It is perfect because the grip material is of higher quality, and the camera body is more curved and customized.
(Note that this only compares build quality and feel; it ignores factors like button arrangement and usability, where I still think the Nikon D7500 is best.)
The weather sealing on the Canon 80D is evident.
The 80D performed well when I used it in an arid climate with a lot of flying dust.
It is important to remember that the flip-out LCD’s design makes it easy for dirt, sand, and more particles to get stuck in the area behind the screen, where they may accumulate over time.
It’s not just the 80D; this is true of any camera with a flexible articulating screen.
Size and Weight:
The Canon 80D measures 139 x 105 x 79 mm (5.47 x 4.13 x 3.11′′) and weighs 730 g (1.61 lb / 25.75 oz).
Its weight is about typical for its class compared to the 773g average for DSLR-type cameras.
It also has an average thickness, measuring 79mm.
Handling:
The Canon 80D performs admirably as a whole.
The Camera has a firm feel and seems designed for advanced users.
It is also convenient and simple to use.
It has all the buttons you would expect to see on a camera in this category, and Canon’s menu system is still, in my opinion, among the best you’ll find on a camera right now.
Since there isn’t as much room to rewire buttons to suit your needs as you might like, Canon may be a little too confident in the 80D’s design.
The ability to instantly retrieve the top setting in your “My Menu” is one personalization that is lacking, for instance.
Comparing the Canon 80D to lower-end DSLR and mirrorless choices available today, which have a shortage of buttons and menu options, I still prefer it by a significant margin.
It’s a substantial deal because you won’t have to frequently access the menu with the 80D to change crucial settings.
Sensor and processor:
This versatile Camera is equipped with a newly created 24.2 Megapixel (APS-C) CMOS sensor that not only records images with high resolution but also has polished individual pixels that enable high ISO rates of 16000 for still photos (expandable to 25600) and 12800 for videos (expandable to 16000, 25600).
To enable Dual Pixel CMOS AF during Live View operation and while recording both Full HD 60 fps movies and Full HD HDR movies, the EOS 80D’s sensor, which has high resolution and high sensitivity, collaborates with the Camera’s DIGIC 6 Image Processor.
Excellent image quality and quick processing speed are possible with Canon’s DIGIC 6 Image Processor in both still images and moving pictures.
Using ISO 12800 to capture images in low light makes excellent resolution with less noise possible.
The Camera’s performance skills are additionally supported by the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, which offers in-camera distortion correction and complete definition, high-speed continuous still photography.
The MP4 video format provides perfect compatibility with tablets and mobile devices.
In addition to saving space on your memory card, highly compressed MP4 video enhances mobile device playback.
The ability to record HD videos using the HDR movie function broadens one’s creative options.
Autofocus:
45-point AF system:
The wide-area, 45-point, all-cross-type AF system on the EOS 80D camera allows for next-level AF operation.
It performs well in low light, has enhanced low luminance performance to EV -3, and is compatible with most EF lenses (lenses with maximum apertures of f/8 or greater, and some lenses with extenders attached may function at a maximum of 27 points).
It also has four alternative AF area selection modes, which are beneficial in various AF circumstances.
These include 45-point AF auto selection, where the Camera automatically determines the AF point, and user-selectable single-point AF, zone AF, and large zone AF.
Users can choose from one of nine predetermined AF zones, three zones for large area AF, and one of three zones for single-point AF.
Improved Dual Pixel CMOS AF:
The EOS 80D camera has Canon’s upgraded Dual Pixel CMOS AF for quick and smooth AF during Live View and movie shooting.
With improved speed, smoother tracking, and compatibility with all EF and EF-S lenses, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system on the EOS 80D excels, delivering superb AF and tracking even in challenging shooting circumstances.
Canon developed this technique using two photodiodes instead of one in each pixel, enabling phase-difference detection autofocus on each pixel.
It results in extended coverage across around 80% of the image plane and virtually no loss in image quality with quick, precise AF.
In videography, where sharpening scenes and objects are essential to the final composition, the advantages of Dual Pixel CMOS AF are readily apparent.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the EOS 80D helps to guarantee focus is attained naturally and precisely, even when transitioning between subjects.
When used with Movie Servo AF, issues in motion are reliably and smoothly tracked; once the EOS 80D locks focus, it doesn’t let go.
LCD Screen:
With a 270° vertical rotation and a 175° horizontal rotation range, the Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0 inch Clear View LCD monitor II that comes with the EOS 80D camera allows users to shoot still images and films at a variety of high and low angles.
The EOS 80D’s LCD shines at moviemaking at practically any number of tips and positions, making it simple to produce excellent movies of athletes on the field, children in the park, documentary interviews, and more.
The touch-sensitive screen allows for simple touch panel operation. Zooming and image switching are both possible using two-finger touch gestures.
Touch AF allows easy access to the menu, quick control options, and fingertip activation of the focus point and shutter release.
This screen might be perfect for creating and reviewing photos because it can show fine detail (at about 1.04 million dots).
The LCD screen has also been given a smudge-resistant coating to lessen fingerprints and maintain a bright, clear image display even in bright light.
Viewfinder:
The EOS 80D camera’s Intelligent Viewfinder offers a clear and comprehensive perspective, bringing the excitement of SLR photography with each use.
Virtually no compositional guesswork is required because of the roughly 100% coverage.
The Intelligent Viewfinder’s quick access to all settings lets photographers focus on their subject and snap the image at the perfect moment.
The Intelligent Viewfinder contains a grid display, a horizontal electronic level, AF points, and AF mode, as well as several other informational points that may all be hidden for manual focus or if the photographer wants to examine their subject without all the image parameters displayed.
Shutter:
With speeds electronically adjusted from 1/8000 to 30 seconds at up to 7 frames per second, the EOS 80D camera has a robust mechanical shutter system.
An upgraded mirror drive makes high-speed, low-vibration performance possible, offering a silent mode for up to 3 frames per second of uninterrupted, noiseless operation.
The shutter has a rating of 100,000 exposures, providing consistent, dependable performance every time and every frame.
Connectivity:
Built-in Wi-Fi® Capability:
Wireless technology is built right into the small design of the new EOS 80D camera.
A compatible iOS® or AndroidTM smartphone* with the free Canon Camera Connect app* can wirelessly control the Camera’s exposure settings, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, and shutter.
You can review images on the EOS 80D without taking them out of the bag.
You can quickly transfer and save images directly from the Camera to a smartphone using a compatible smartphone with the Camera Connect app* installed.
It allows you to shoot remotely from a distance, even in Live View mode, for those difficult-to-capture shots.
The EOS 80D and other DLNA products, including HDTVs, smartphones, and more, may easily share files thanks to full DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatibility.
You can share your images and video to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY# for simple social networking site sharing. Photographs can be printed wirelessly on a printer certified for PictBridge without a computer.
Surprisingly, the EOS 80D already has all of these wireless features; no other devices are required!
Built-in NFC:
Numerous AndroidTM smartphones* that are compatible with the Canon Connect Station CS100 can be connected with the help of a built-in NFC (Near Field Communication).
You can transfer your images and movies by touching the EOS 80D camera to the Connect Station CS100.
All your pictures and movies can be stored, viewed, and organized using the Connect Station CS100 from a single device.
Battery:
According to CIPA standards, the Canon 80D’s LP-E6N battery offers a battery life of 960 photos.
Although its battery life is about average for its class—a DSLR-type camera has an average battery life of 948, it would still be a good idea to get extra batteries for extended picture excursions.
Lenses:
There are 333 native lenses now available for the Canon 80D’s Canon EF/EF-S lens mount.
Canon can maintain its position as the top choice among professional photographers worldwide because of the EF mount’s most extensive and comprehensive native lens selection in the DSLR market.
A sensor-based image stabilization feature is absent from the Canon 80D, yet 113 of its lenses already offer optical image stabilization.
Weatherproof Canon 80D Lenses
For the Canon 80D’s weather-sealed body, 93 lenses are available with weather-sealing.
The most well-liked Canon 80D lenses that I have used with my Canon 80d are given below:
- Canon EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM
- Canon EF 75-300mm f4.0-5.6 III
- Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM
- Canon EF 35-350mm f3.5-5.6L USM
- Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM
- Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM
- Canon EF 80-200mm f4.5-5.6 II
- Canon EF 35-80mm f4.0-5.6 III
Video feature:
You may capture videos with the Canon 80D at the greatest resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 24, 30, or 60 frames/second and save them in MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs.
In most circumstances, the Canon 80D’s Full HD resolution will be sufficient.
However, if you’re looking for footage with the best resolution possible, check out our Top Cameras with 4K (Ultra-HD) Video list.
You might also look at the Canon 90D, its replacement, which supports 4K video capture.
A Mono speaker and a Stereo microphone are both included inside the 80D.
The Canon 80D is a fantastic camera for high-quality filming because it has a connector for an external microphone and a headphone port for connecting external headphones.
Time-Lapse Movie:
The Time-Lapse Movie function on the EOS 80D camera allows you to make a silent movie by combining still images at specific intervals.
The EOS 80D’s Time-Lapse Movie function produces professional-quality films in-camera without the need for a computer, saving valuable time when working in the field and making it ideal for showing the movement of clouds across the sky, growth of a plant, changes in the landscape, the flow of people walking, and more.
Image Quality:
The 80D’s 24-megapixel sensor can produce detailed, stunning images sufficient for any appropriate print size.
Although it’s important to remember that Canon’s most recent entry-level DSLRs, such as the Rebel t7i and Rebel SL2, also feature the same premium sensor, it’s important to note that Canon received some online praise for its improvements with this new generation sensor in terms of noise performance and dynamic range.
As a result of Canon’s prior cameras’ long-standing sensor performance gaps with rival brands like Sony, Nikon, and Fuji, photographers have been clamoring for the firm to make improvements.
Under normal circumstances, I would feel comfortable pushing the 80D up to ISO 1600 and possibly even more.
Photography Type:
I also tested this Camera for different photography genres, so I see in what area this Camera has its expertise, and here is what I concluded.
Sports photography:
Common (everyday life) photography and photojournalism are related, and “sports photography” describes various activities.
A short moment and the ferocity of a sports competition are both recorded.
To effectively capture and recount such brief events, photographers’ skills, creativity, and technology improvements are essential.
This type of photography likewise ignited our current love.
Daily photography:
AVERAGE contender for this style of photography, the Canon 80D has a Daily Photography score of 59.
Even though most photographers focus on one or two specific photographic genres, experimenting with various shooting techniques may lead to unexpected discoveries.
It is what I would call “everyday photography.
” With the same technical and aesthetic skills, you can produce a variety of photographic styles.
If you succeed in one endeavor, you might pick up valuable techniques and abilities to improve your photography.
Unposed, everyday photography is the best kind to use for it.
You can capture a wide variety of images with just one good Camera.
Street Photography:
A type of photography known as street photography captures ordinary life in public spaces.
The openness of the setting frequently allows the photographer to shoot unguarded candid photos of strangers.
The practice of street photography encourages environmental awareness.
It enables you to be aware of your surroundings.
Shooting, among other things, can strengthen your character.
Canon 80D is a GOOD option for this style of photography, with a score of 63 for Street Photography.
